If you run Zoho Books you already know the uncomfortable truth. No standard report gives you that. Not the Sales by Customer report, not the Tax Summary, not the GST reports, and not a customised report either. The return module gives you the answer, the template lets you verify it.

So most accountants do what I did for years. Export the invoice register, look at the taxable value and the tax amount, divide one by the other, and back into the rate. On a 300-invoice month that is an hour of error-prone arithmetic. Across several client organisations it is an afternoon every filing period.

This post explains why the reports never show the rate, where the data actually lives, and a free Excel template that turns a raw Zoho export into an invoice by rate matrix in one paste.

Every line on an invoice carries its own tax rate and tax amount. The invoice itself only carries totals.

Reports in Zoho Books are built on invoice-level data. When you add a "Tax" column to a customised report you get the total tax on the invoice, not the rate. When one invoice mixes an 18% item with a 5% item, no invoice-level figure can tell you the split. The information is not lost, it simply is not exposed where you are looking.

It has been sitting there the whole time.

The same route works for Sales → Credit Notes, which you need for the amendment and credit note tables of the return.

What you want is one row per invoice, with columns for the taxable value at each rate, the tax at each rate, and a total that ties back to the invoice.

I built a reusable template that does this. You paste the raw export into a Raw sheet, and a Report sheet fills itself in:

• One row per invoice number with customer, date and GSTIN.

• Taxable value and tax split into 0%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28% columns.

• A row total that must equal the invoice total, so mismatches show themselves.

• A Config sheet that locates columns by header name, so it does not break when Zoho reorders the export or when a client has extra custom columns.
